Reflection

My support system has always instilled the value of stretching yourself to learn more because you never know what you will get out of it. This mindset has made me a multi passionate individual but everything has and will always comes down to one thing... intentionality.

Yall' ..... I officially QUIT

I have always been a busy person from a multi-season athlete to participating in various students organizations in high school.

That need to be busy transitioned to me ALWAYS working at least 2 jobs. In college, I always had campus jobs from the library, working for an athletic team, or babysitting professor’s children. In grad school, I worked at the soccer stadium, a restaurant, and 2 campus jobs. All of those jobs have added to my resume and added to my project management experience.

When I transitioned to my "big girl" job, I started my role and worked part time at a non profit for a year and a half. I quit the nonprofit but transitioned to writing grants for nonprofits and launching Be Great By Design all while working full time.

I then bought a house (which is a full time job as a single person...don't argue with me LOL) and picked up a part time job at Lowe's, the hardware store. I picked up the position selling appliances, and eventual doors and windows, because I wanted the discount, I needed to learn more from a lens of a new homeowner, I wanted to get out of the house and not spend money, and more importantly, wanted to learn the skill of selling as an entrepreneur.

I walked in with the idea I would only work there for a year. I ended up staying there for 16 months. What solidified my decision to leave was a conversation with my tax professional, my summer travel plans, and not so pleasant interactions with my manager at the time.

My first manger understood and invested in helping me enhance that skills I desired. Three managers later, I stopped getting that development and a larger issue stewed. I stopped being acknowledged as a human.. and I will leave it there.

I still love the company, believe in what they do. However my time there made me realize something so much bigger.

  1. A lot of people build great processes but the roll out is where the brilliance flops
  2. Accountability is situational but is essential at every company and every level
  3. Everyone deserves the opportunity to be developed no matter what you do. PERIOD.

I have always had a part time job of some sort. Not because I needed money but because I wanted to expand my knowledge, my impact, and my skillset. You can often earn money anywhere but be intentional about what you get beyond the check.

As someone who struggled to come to this realization, who struggled to walk away, and who is fighting every single day the urge to pick up another job, my question to you is:

  • No matter how big or how small, what is your why in the position(s) you hold?
  • Do you have the relationship to grow and expand on the skills that matter to you?
  • If you are super busy, have you ever considered what life looked like if you removed some of the extras? What stops you from removing the extras?

R.E.P.O.R.T

  • Reading - Black Candle Women… for the third time. I’m giving it one more try and it is paying off
  • Eating - Quest Protein chips.. specifically the sweet chilli ones
  • Playing - Balanced Black Girl: Episode 228.
  • Obsessing - The warm weather and being outside more
  • Recommending - Holding Court with Eboni K. Williams - season 3 is back! and this is getting me through the stair master every week
  • Treating - to this new hobby. First golf lesson is next week!

Happy Hump Day Reader This is a special edition of my newsletter. I am crossing a new horizon tomorrow. If you recall from a previous newsletter, I set my goals and milestones around my birthday. In setting these new goals, I noticed a reoccurring pattern. I was intentional and reflective about what did not serve me thus far, what did serve me and add value, and really where my growth moments are from a mindset and personal development aspect. By way of celebrating my birthday with you, I...
